Champions Too Strong For Bury

Bury Grammar School Old Boys 1s 1-6 UCLAN 1s

On paper it appeares that, once again, the league leaders overpowered The Old Boys in comprehensive fashion. However, this was not as easy as it seemd for the newly crowned champions. For long periods of the game Bury held UCLAN at bay whilst again fashioning chances of their own.

The Old Boys' only goal of the game came when they had just gone two-nil down. A magnificent team goal, straight from the push back gave David Hodbod his eigth goal of the season and produced a contender for goal of the season.

With five minutes to go Bury had held the champions to a four - one scoreline. This may seem like a ridiculous statement, but at this point it seems reasonable to point out that UCLAN had averaged ten goals a game throughout the season.

FOSTER SEALS THE POINTS…..AGAIN

Bury Grammar School Old Boys Men's 1s 3-2 Urmston Men's 4s

An Andy Foster goal with just thirty seconds remaining handed Bury all three points following another fiery clash with Urmston.

The Old Boys had the best of the opening exchanges, with some slick interchanges opening up the Urmston defence. The fully deserved break through came in the 22nd minute, following a long corner from the left. The ball ran across the ‘D’ and found Tariq Sheikh arriving late at the back post. His instant control and finish gave Bury the lead, as Sheikh claimed his first of the season.

Just three minutes later The Old Boys extended their lead. Following more good play from the midfield the ball was delivered to Cooke; although his shot was saved, the rebound fell to Berry who wasted no time in firing the ball goal-wards. However, Berry was denied his fourth of the season when an Urmston defender blatantly kicked the ball off the line. From the resultant penalty stroke, a composed Howard Spencer gave Bury a two goal cushion.

The Old Boys maintained their lead until half time. However, after the restart Urmston gained the upper hand and quickly pulled a goal back from a short corner.

With the game becoming increasingly fractious, Urmston equalised following another short corner routine. The visitors were then presented with the chance to take the lead for the first time. A forward broke clear, but keeper Neil Smith did enough to block his first effort. With Smith still stranded on the floor, the Urmston striker sliced his second effort wide of the open goal.

The Old Boys made full use of this let off as they launched one last attack. Following a corner from the right Danny Butler drilled the ball across the goal and, for the second game running, Andy Foster was on hand to give Bury a hard fought three points.
