Old Boys Maintain Top Spot

BGSOB 3-0 Lytham St. Annes
Fidler (2)
Matthews

The Old Boys maintained their one hundred per cent start to the season with a three-nil win over Lytham St. Annes.

After a two week break between fixtures the Old Boys showed no signs of rustiness as they started well and made all the early running. With pressure on the Lytham defence mounting, Dave Matthews pounced on a rebound producing a perfect finish into the side netting with a reverse stick shot.

The visitors did produce moments of good play, but the Bury defence held firm and keeper Heaton was rarely called into action during the first thirty five minutes. As the half progressed, The Old Boys made an increasing number of chances and doubled their lead shortly before half time.

Leading scorer Fidler fired another spectacular reverse stick shot, this time finding the bottom right hand corner. The opening fifteen minutes of the second half saw Lytham apply great pressure to the home defence, and Heaton was called into action; firstly saving when one on one, and then turning over a deflected short corner.

The reintroduction of Fidler and Cooke, together with Matthews saw the Old Boys resume control of the game. The result was put beyond doubt when Fidler hit another reverse stick effort, which was deflected past the visiting keeper. This gave Fidler his twelfth goal in four games.

Bury have now won all four of their opening matches and have done so without conceding a goal, whilst scoring thirty of their own. They face another break next week, before taking on local rivals Bolton at Parenthorn.

Bury Hit New Record Score

Bowdon 0
BGSOB 13
Fidler (5)
C. Lowe (2)
Matthews (2)
Cooke (2)
Chandler
Hillary

The Old Boys recorded their highest ever victory on Saturday as, for the second week running, they notched double figures. The score-line is somewhat deceptive as Bowdon, particularly in the second half, mounted dangerous counter attacks with good speed and skill. However the damage had been done in the first half as Bury clinically converted the majority of their chances.

The scoring was opened by Chris Lowe and by the tenth minute Bury had netted three goals, with Fidler and Matthews getting on the score sheet. This set the tone for much of the half as The Old Boys created and took numerous chances to go in at half time with a nine goal lead.

The second half saw Bowdon fight back strongly and reduce some of Bury’s attacking threat, however The Old Boys managed to find the net a further four times.

In total Fidler scored five, Chris Lowe, Dave Matthews and Matt Cooke each netted twice with Nathan Chandler and Ian Hillary rounding off the scoring. Highlights included Fiddler's first, a reverse stick effort from the edge of the circle, surrounded by three players, and still finding the bottom corner. Cooke's second from a well worked short corner and Matthews double, the first a prime example of playing to the whistle and the second an unstoppable short corner strike.

Bury will be happy with much of their build up play and clinical finishing, but now face the frustration of a two week break before their next fixture at home, a tricky tie against Lytham.

Winning Ways Continue For Bury

BGSOB 11-0 Morecambe
Fidler (4)
Foster (3)
C. Lowe (2)
Matthews
Berry

The Old Boys continued their good early season form by cruising to a victory over a much weakened Morecambe side. With one player missing and one half-injured, the visitors were always going to be up against it, and so it proved as Bury took a five-nil half time lead.

The pick of the first half goals being Andy Foster’s second, as he controlled a difficult, bouncing ball from Jonny Lowe before slotting the ball home. The second half saw six further goals, including another one out of the top drawer from Fiddler.

All in all Fiddler grabbed four, Foster ‘bagged’ a hat-trick, Chris Lowe opened his Old Boys account with two and Berry and Matthews got one a piece. A

ll credit must go to Morecambe, who played with great spirit in a difficult situation. The Old Boys are fully aware that when they make the trip up to Morecambe, this game will have a vastly different score-line.

Bury move on to face the challenge of Bowdon next weekend, as they try to maintain their excellent form.
