Solid Start in Div 9

BGSOB 3-0 Didsbury
Robinson
Matthews (PS)
Fidler

The Old Boys made a winning start to life in division nine, with what was ultimately a comfortable win over old foes Didsbury. Both teams had come up from ten north last season and thus knew each other well and a tight game was anticipated.

The match produced a nervous opening for the Bury back line as a Didsbury striker broke clear on goal. Had he squared the ball to his strike partner, who had an open net, Didsbury wouold have been one up. However, Heaton made an excellent challenge and the resulting half saved shot dribbled harmlessly wide. Following this wake up call Bury spent the remainder of the half putting pressure on the Didsbury goal.

Mid-way through the half, following a string of short and long corners, The Old Boys made the break through. After an initial short corner was cleared, a right wing cross was fired into the circle. The resulting melee saw the ball arrive at the far post, where Xander Robinson coolly lifted the ball into the net, giving Bury the lead.

Soon after, with Bury again mounting sustained pressure, a Didsbury defender had to kick the ball off the line. Dave Matthews stepped up and fired the stroke expertly passed the keeper.

The second half followed much the same vein as the first, with Bury encamped in the Didsbury half. On numerous occasions the ball was fired across the circle, with only the finishing touch at the far post missing. In addition some goal-line clearances from keeper and defenders, helped to frustrate the visitors as they searched for the killer goal.

With ten minutes remaining, Didsbury launched an attack which culminated in eight successive short corners. However, Heaton was only forced into action once as the Bury short corner defence held firm.

With seconds remaining Luke Fiddler put the icing on the cake with a glorious effort from the top of the circle. Receiving the ball with his back to goal, Fiddler engineered space for himself before lashing an unstoppable stirke into the top corner.

All in all, this was a good start, and Bury now move on to face Morecambe at Parenthorn next week.
