Bury Miss Out On Christmas Top Spot

Carlisle.....3
Bury.........1
Matthews (61)

The top two teams in the division met at Carlisle on Saturday and produced a highly competitive game, which rounded off the first half of the season.

The Old Boys fell behind early on as the hosts converted a short corner with a fierce shot from the top of the ‘D’. Carlisle applied more pressure to the Bury goal but they could not add to their tally before half time, with Titlow again producing some good saves.

Bury could have gone in level at half time, as they mounted attacks of their own. Firstly Ainscow’s shot was deflected wide, and then Matthews had a shot turned off the line by a well-placed defender, having rounded the keeper.

The second half saw The Old Boys revert to their normal formation and this allowed them to use the ball more effectively. However it was Carlisle who struck again, following a well-worked move down the right. The hosts increased their lead midway through the second half as they scored from close range, following some good work at the top of the D.

Despite falling further behind, Bury’s heads did not drop. In fact they began to produce some of their best hockey of the game. An incisive move provided Shori with an opportunity and, when the keeper smothered the ball, a penalty stroke was awarded. Matthews converted the flick to give the Old Boys a glimmer of hope.

The goal proved to be no more than a consolation, however, as Carlisle deservedly took the three points. This was an excellent game of hockey, played in a great spirit by both sides.

Squad: Titlow, Cheung, T.Sheikh, S. Sheikh, Aitken, Stoneman, Foster, Matthews, Larmett, Hillary, Ainscow, Butler, Shori, Berry, McManus.
