The Old Boys secured their first ever double against Bolton and their first win at Harper Green since 2005, with a six-one victory on Saturday.
Missing the injured Stoneman and the absent McManus, Todd and Wright the Old Boys were still able to take a squad of fifteen, with James Larmett making a welcome reappearance.
Bolton started the game the brighter of the two sides, taking the game to the league leaders with some good early pressure. However, the Old Boys got into their rhythm and started to produce their trademark passing hockey. The opening goal though, came from a superb solo run from Hillary. Collecting the ball in midfield Hillary set off down the left wing, beating several men and reaching the by-line. With the keeper rushing out, the midfielder had the presence of mind to take it past him and score with an excellent lifted finish.
Soon after, Bury had doubled their advantage from a well-worked penalty corner. A double shift saw the ball returned to Matthews who picked his slot and reached double figures for the season.
Bury couldn’t relax however as Bolton were winning penalty corners of their own, and managed to halve the deficit when one was deflected in off a defensive stick.
The game was developing into an interesting match, with both sides asking questions. It was Bury though who grabbed the vital next goal, restoring their two-goal advantage before half time. Fidler received the ball on the edge of the ‘D’ with his back to goal. Creating space for the shot, the striker then produced a sublime chipped reverse stick effort, giving Bury some breathing space.
The second half started in much the same fashion, with Bolton mounting attacks down the flanks. Again, though, Bury held firm and launched into their own attacking hockey. Following a disallowed goal, that was turned into a short corner, the Old Boys extended their lead through Cooke. With the initial strike being saved the Bury front man once again displayed his predatory instincts by lifting home the rebound.
Arguably, the fifth Bury goal rivalled Fidler’s first for goal of the game. Tariq Sheikh won the ball on his own by-line and started a move which went from ‘D’ to ‘D.’ The ball was eventually delivered to Cooke in the Bolton ‘D,’ who was closed down by the keeper. Unselfishly Cooke squared the ball to Fidler, who had the relatively simple task of applying the finish.
With the final touch of the game, Fidler sealed his hat-trick and bagged his twenty seventh goal of the season. Finding himself one on one with the keeper, Fidler coolly applied the finishing touch to another flowing passing move.
Bury are now three points clear of Leigh and six points clear of Blackpool (who have a game in hand), as they take on the second and third placed teams in the next two weeks.
